過日、ある日本のチャット・サイトでお喋りに興じていたら、私がアメリカからのアクセスということに対して、「留学生は、羨ましいを通り越して、憎い」という日本の女子大生に会いました。
またその女子大生は、「帰国子女とか聞くと、“けっ”って感じ」とまで言っていて、曲がりなりにも『海外子女教育』にコラムを書かせていただいて３年になる私としては、ちょっと「帰国子女達のディフェンスを・・・」と、女子大生に「自分の希望で海外に行った私のような留学生と違って、帰国子女と呼ばれる人達は、自分の意志に関係なく、親の都合で、行きたくもない場所に行かされて、それで日本に帰っていじめとかにもあっているのよ」など、帰国子女達の苦しみのようなことを、それこそマシンガンのごとくのタイプ打ちで伝えようとしたのですが、心がかたくなな彼女には通じることもなく、「所詮、（アメリカに）行ってるあんたには判らないのよ、私の気持は！ もういい」みたいに、投げやりに会話を終わってしまいました。
「ふーーーっ」と溜息をついた私は、終わりない日本での帰国子女への偏見に、心を痛めたものでした。
自分では英語がうまくなりたいというその女子大生に、同級生の帰国子女を恨んだり憎んだりするかわりに、逆にその帰国子女から英語なり海外の文化なり、学ぶ姿勢があれば、彼女は得るものもあるのにねぇ・・・・憎しみや突き放すことからは、何も生まれないのに。

I am a New Zealand woman who has been married to a Japanese man for 4 years now. We live in NZ and have 2 sons. As we are considering moving back to Japan there are many questions that I have.
My first real concern is about bilingual education. As our children are in the fortunate position as many of your supporters are to be 'born bilingual' it would seem a shame to lose that. We are at the moment having real problems keeping our 4 year old son's Japanese language up to a level that is appropriate for his age. Even though we speak Japanese in the home all the time... Anyway I was wondering if you have any other "kokusai kekkon" couples on your supporters list that you would let me know.

I came across your page while doing research for a book I'm writing -- about multilingualism and multiculturalism -- for Plenum Publishing. I'd like very much to write about your group in the book, publicize your Website, and so on.
I have one question, however. So far as I can tell, nothing that turns up on your page takes up any questions about *language*. That is, I assume that almost everyone involved speaks at least English and Japanese, perhaps more languages than those two but that doesn't seem to be a subject of discussion. My impression may be a mistaken one -- I don't know Japanese at all, for example, and therefore don't know what may be contained in your Japanese section. But I would be grateful for an opportunity to discuss this issue with someone (or several someones) among you.

はじめまして。ホームページの“Ｗho Cares？”を始めとする記事を大変興味深く読みました。特に、文化、国籍、人種、個人などの違いを各々の特性として認めていこうという視点に大変共感を覚えました。私は、日本生まれの日本育ち（？）ですが、過去２年間アメリカの大学で日本語を教えながら心理学を勉強し、各地を旅行したりした経験を通し、今は日本人としてよりも、むしろ個人として、また（大袈裟に聞こえるのですが）地球人として、様々な人々、事柄に関わっていきたいと考えるようになりました。将来は、留学生、異文化問題を専門としたカウンセリングの方向に進みたいと思っているのですが、私の住む関西（神戸）ではそのような方面の活動が少なく、なんとなく八方塞がりの思いでいたところ、このホームページを見つけ、なんとも嬉しくなってお便りを書いてしまいました。（インターネットに感謝！） これからちょくちょく寄らせてもらいます。
